An Introduction to High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDR)

HDR, or High Dynamic Range Imaging seems to be all the rage these days. HDRI is described by Wikipedia as:

In image processing, computer graphics and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures
(the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows. (from Wikipedia)

More accurately however, the images that are commonly seen and referred to as HDR or HDRI images are tone-mapped.

Tone mapping is a technique used in image processing and computer graphics to map a set of colours to another; often to approximate the appearance of high dynamic range images in media with a more limited dynamic range. Print-outs, CRT or LCD monitors, and projectors all have a limited dynamic range which is inadequate to reproduce the full range of light intensities present in natural scenes. Essentially, tone mapping addresses the problem of strong contrast reduction from the scene values (radiance) to the displayable range while preserving the image details and color appearance important to appreciate the original scene content.

Great online resource - Phototree

Ever wished that there was a way to easily browse through Flickr to find photographs which are catered to your taste? Well, there is now. Phototree is a search engine which allows you to browse through hundreds of photographs from Flickr. It works very similarly to Stumbleupon, only without the toolbar.

It has a rating system, and as you rate each photograph it presents to you, it will “learn” what kinds of image you like and dislike and adjust the images that it presents to you accordingly. It will also save any of the images that you have rated positively in a favourites folder which gives you the option of going back and browsing through the photographer's photostreams at your leisure.

I have been using this for a while now and it is easy to use, giving you the opportunity to see images that you normally may miss. It's a great online resource and it's absolutely free.

Secondbrain - Social Networking that works

Got my invite to secondbrain today and am very impressed with the layout and the way it works. I've had a long time battle with trying to get what Twitter was actually about, I've tried but never really made much sense.

Secondbrain seems to make perfect sense and is nice and easy to use. You basically enter all your info from Flickr, Youtube, Delicious, Blogger, Wordpress etc. and adds it into a feed that is more along the lines of Digg/Pligg style.

From a designers point of view the design is very crisp and easy on the eye, from what I can tell it would be very easy for them to implement further sites to their list with ease. I've sent a few invites but give it a try and let me know what you think. I'm very impressed.....
